Another part of the answer comes from my childhood. To avoid the third-grade class bully, I had to go home after school through a series of alleys. The route was not continuous, but rather a disconnected journey: walking down short sections of alleys, passing behind old wooden houses, through dim garages, and across well-manicured backyards. This was my first involvement with alleys and I filed it in my visual memory.
