After trading for 35 years, the oldest gay and lesbian bookstore in America - the Oscar Wilde Bookshop in Greenwich Village, New York - is to permanently close its shutters on 19 January 2003.

Store owner Larry Lingle, who has owned the bookshop since 1996, told the New York Times that economics have forced him to make the decision to close. Meanwhile store manager Kim Brinster pointed to the growth of huge book chains as having a significant knock-on effect.
