The Jungle. Chapters 1 - 7
Title. Sinclair creates suspense with his very first words: The Jungle.
His title connotes a wild, dark, threatening environment, an uncivilized scene
of ruthless competition and violent struggle for survival. The title also
invokes the concept of "the law of the jungle": that might makes right, that
gentleness, innocence, virtue, and love are at the mercy of raw power.
Dedication. Most editions still carry the original dedication: "To the
