WHAT HAPPENED at the Villa Diodati in 1816, that wet summer? You remember it was there, on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, that Lord Byron established himself, together with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (soon to become the second Mrs. Shelley), and Claire Clairmont. Byron was under 30, Mary still in her teens, and the others in their early twenties. Poetry went on there, storytelling, and love-making.
