SOME classics are more equal than others. Fifty years ago this week, on August 17th 1945, one of the great barnyard fables of our time was first published: George Orwell's "Animal Farm". Though ostensibly about tyrannical pigs, heroic horses and silly sheep, it is really about the betrayal of the ideals of the Russian Revolution.
American publishers were not at all sure what to make of it when "Animal Farm" was offered to them. Dial Press returned the manuscript to Orwell saying "it is impossible to sell animal stories in the USA." British publishers were as obtuse. Victor ...
