In August 1941 George Orwell joined the BBC to work as Talks Producer for the Indian Section of the BBC's Eastern Service. For two years, which Orwell later considered "wasted years," he was involved in broadcasting British propaganda to the Indian subcontinent, aimed at strengthening Indian support for the British war effort. This article discusses the tensions between Orwell's war-time service for the BBC and his position on behalf of Indian independence, a stance he had adopted earlier in his career.
