The panel sponsored by the Melville Society at the 2001 MLA convened on Thursday evening to hear papers on the theme of "Ethnic Rhetoric in Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno" and The Confidence-Man." The night venue in a hotel full of English professors near the meandering Mississippi was well-suited to the task of "discussing themes that thrive in shade" (Clarel4.17.202).
