The author argues Herman Melville's books of poetry were significantly influenced by the US Civil War. Involvement by many of his relatives in the war, his self-education, and evaluation of Melville's poetry are discussed.

TO LITERARY HISTORY, Herman Melville (1819-1891) is above all the author of Moby-Dick and other novels.
