Herman Melville
Herman Melville based his great works Moby Dick and Billy Budd on his own early experiences at sea during the 1840s. One of the great figures in American literature, he was largely unappreciated in his own day, but had his literary reputation revived during the 1920s thanks to renewed scholarly interest in his works.
