Chapter LXXXII The Honor And Glory Of Whaling
Ishmael tells us that he has become convinced that whaling is a very
ancient activity, as well as an exalted one. The first whaleman was the Greek
hero Perseus, who killed a sea monster to save Andromeda, a king's daughter.
The skeleton of this monster, Ishmael contends, was preserved in a temple of
Joppa - the city from which the second great whaleman, Jonah, began his
