Moby Dick, one of the greatest books ever written, was the work of
Herman Melville, an American writer. Melville was born in New York
City. He spent most of his early years at sea, sailing on whaling
and trading vessels as a cabin boy. In 1841, he set sail for the South
Seas on a whaling ship. He ``jumped ship'' (deserted) and spent a
month as a prisoner of the natives on the Marquesas Islands in the
Pacific Ocean. He escaped aboard an Australian ship, which he deserted
in Tahiti. In 1843, he enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy. In 1846,
Melville moved to Massachusetts. ...
