That Herman Melville read widely and employed various authors in his own work has been long established. That one of those authors was John Milton has been demonstrated for such novels as Typee (1846), Moby-Dick (1851), The Confidence-Man (1857), and Billy Budd (written in the late 1880s), among other works.
