Thomas Hardy is not a poet likely to come to mind during the first flush of romance: his best love poems concern his stricken remorse at the death of his first wife, Emma Gifford, from whom he had been estranged for years. They slept in separate rooms; she lived mostly in the attic. But her loss had a surprising effect on Hardy, filling him with a compunction he pinpointed with marvelous accuracy.
