Thomas Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton on 2 June 1840, in the parish of Stinsford, an area Hardy called "Mellstock" in his novels. In this extract from `Tess of the d'Urbervilles', published in 1891, Angel Clare falls in love with Tess as the Wessex countryside basks in an idyllic springtime. Hardy died at Max Gate, his house on the outskirts of Dorchester, on 11 January 1928.
