LONDON: Tonight [Jan. 16] all that was mortal of Thomas Hardy lies
beneath Wessex soil in earth brought to Westminster Abbey from Dorset.
Only the great novelist's heart was interred in Dorset. The simultaneous
ceremonies in London and in Stinsford provided the sharpest contrast.
In London the kingdom's greatest men lent their presence at the state
funeral. At Stinsford shopkeepers were present among the people who
knew and loved Thomas Hardy as a man, rather than a distinguished
author.
