Oct. 12--George Bernard Shaw began writing "Heartbreak House" in 1914, before the first shot was fired in what we now know as World War I. Anyone who wonders why he withheld publication until 1919 need only feel the shiver when distant explosions are heard in the final moments of his eerily prescient social comedy.
