In his 1930 preface to the script for The Philanderer, Shaw opined that this early play was either 36 years out of date or 36 years ahead of its time. Bingo. In 1966 this comedy about smashing gender roles and scorning marriage for free love would have been right on the edge. And I haven't a doubt its time will come round again, as we keep tying ourselves in theoretical knots about what it means to be a woman ...
