"Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles." Those words by Ralph Waldo Emerson were shared with Mayor Anthony Williams in this column just days after his November sweep during which he won all 140 precincts, trouncing his Republican opponent. By quoting Emerson, I had hoped to convey the message that the mayor would face difficulties far greater than those he had witnessed as the city's fiscal guru accountable only to Congress. In such a climate the only sure bet is steadfast attention to the values and principles that brought him victory.
