disagreed upon, from the time of his death in 1882 until the present. Is he
essentially a philosopher and preacher of a sound and consistent doctrine, or
is he a man of ideals and a poet, whose virtues rest in his personal force and
integrity and even in his admitted inconsistencies? There are broad areas of
