Robert Davis has always been a Valley guy at heart. He grew up in Encino and remembers peddling his bicycle down Tarzana Drive past the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate on the way to a friend's house.

These days, Davis is president of Manhattan Holding Co., a developer based in Long Beach, and he's back in the old neighborhood with some bold plans.

He's building MonteVerde, a private, gated community of 31 big homes on the old Burroughs estate.

They will be priced at more than $1 million each and range in size from 4,800 square ...
