Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 27 "Tarzan" books, but there's no doubt that the character is best known today through the movies. And Tarzan ranks right up there with Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein and Dracula as one of the most-filmed characters of all time.
The first "Tarzan" movie, made in 1918, was an enormous hit, leading to five more silent "Tarzans" before the end of the 1920s. And the most recent versions came last year -- a failed attempt at a TV series by the WB network and an animated made-for-video Disney sequel.
