Chapter 15. Knitting

The scene is once again Defarge's wine-shop in Paris. The drinking has
begun early today as it has on the two previous days. But the wine does not
lighten the spirit of the drinkers. Instead, it makes them gloomy and any
fire that it instills in the breasts of the drinkers remains there and
smolders. Indeed, there are many in the shop who cannot afford even a glass
of wine, and these quench their thirst with talk as they glide from seat to
