Oliver Twist: Chapters 1 - 15
Chapter One
Somewhere in a purposely unnamed town on an unstated day, a child was
born to an unknown woman in the local workhouse. Attended by the parish
surgeon and a beer-drinking midwife, she bore a sickly male child whose life
hung in the balance. Asking to see the child, the frail young mother who had
been found wandering the parish streets, had only time to kiss her child
before she died. The child, Oliver, cried lustily, unaware of the hardships
life was to hold for him.
