THERE was a time, in the early 20th Century, when GK Chesterton was a very famous author.

So prominent was his prole, in fact, that another popular writer of the time - also known by two initials and a surname - turned him into a simile.

It was PG Wodehouse who wrote that a particular noise had the distinctive oral qualities of "Mr GK Chesterton falling onto a sheet of tin."

When this was written, everybody knew exactly what Wodehouse meant.
