OK, G.K. -- I am sometimes asked which writers I have been most influenced by, and two that I always mention are Mark Twain and G.K. Chesterton. Everybody knows Twain, but far fewer are familiar with Chesterton, and that's too bad. He's well worth knowing.

Today is his birthday. Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in England on this date in 1874, and for pure elegance of style, few writers have matched him over the years. He has also remained highly quotable. "Silence is the unbearable repartee" is a Chesterton line.

So is "A good novel tells us the truth about its hero, but a bad novel tells ...
