ACCORDING to George Orwell, the only British writers who stood up for the Jews "before the days of Hitler" were Dickens and Charles Reade. He forgot George Eliot's sympathetic Daniel Deronda - and Dickens' Fagin - but otherwise Orwell was largely right. Caricatures of ugly, grasping Jews unfortunately mark 19th-century British fiction.
