Forget the Marquis de Sade -- we've got George Fredrick Handel. Sure, writing that Christmas classic, "The Messiah," probably scored the Baroque composer some points with the man upstairs, but anyone who asks his vocalists to sing quicksilver trills and cadenzas that would make Jimi Hendrix blush must be in league with Satan. And to top it all off, he expects his male heroes to make the ultimate sacrifice -- castration! That way, they retain boyish soprano-esque voices but with the sustaining power of a male frame.

Thankfully, no one takes their opera quite so seriously today, but reviving ...
