Some shows become controversial, but others are born that way.

"Nothing Sacred" is in the second category. Two months before its scheduled debut, the ABC drama about a young, liberal priest in a large, urban church has already been attacked by the 350,000-member Catholic League for its main character's aggressive questioning of church doctrine.

In the opening episode, Father Ray (Kevin Anderson, "Sleeping with the Enemy") hears the confession of a young woman who is considering an abortion and, instead of counseling her firmly against it, tells her that her conscience must be her guide. In ...
