Julius Caesar Shakespeare's Roman tragedy, based fairly closely on the translation of Plutarch by Sir Thomas North , was first printed in the First Folio (1623), but there is an apparent reference to a performance of it at the Globe on 21 September 1599 in a notebook of Thomas Platter . It has been a popular play in the theatre. After the Restoration, it was played, with little alteration, by the King's Company . Thomas Betterton played Brutus frequently from 1684 to 1709. An adaptation published in 1719 and acted at Drury Lane continued to influence performances for a century.
