George Henry Lewes, one of the soundest of Victorian critics, reviewed
Jane Eyre in Fraser's Magazine (1847). He was much moved by the novel, which
he admired for its excellent plot, its vivid characterization, and its
fidelity to life. "... reality - deep, significant reality - is the great
characteristic of the book." It contains "actual suffering and experience," it
is "soul speaking to soul." He confesses the book made him weep, particularly
