For about a week Jane dreamed almost every night of a small baby. This
worried her because she remembered Bessie Leaven saying that "to dream of
children was a sure sign of trouble." Sure enough, after a few days Bessie's
husband, the coachman from Gateshead, arrived to tell her that John Reed had
got into debt and killed himself and that Mrs. Reed had had a stroke and was
