Ambrose Bierce defined a year as ``a period of 365 disappointments,'' and I expect many politicians feel that way about 1998. But hey, if they have any imagination at all, they should be able to find something to look forward to in 1999.
Take the Republicans. So far they've failed miserably to get rid of a scandal-ridden president, but they certainly have neutralized his influence in national politics and domestic policy. There he is, hanging and twisting in the political winds, as the next presidential campaign begins.
