A sweater, Ambrose Bierce wrote in his humorous Devil's Dictionary, is a "garment worn by a child when its mother is feeling chilly." Overdressing children, of course, is just one of many motherisms that seem to go with the job. Our overly swaddled artists grew up with a firsthand awareness of these maternal idiosyncrasies and lovingly (if laughingly) portrayed them in their cover paintings.
