Walt Whitman was one of our nation's greatest poets. He was born in
West Hills, Long Island, New York. Whitman did not have much formal
education. He worked as a printer, schoolteacher, and newspaperman
before he began writing poetry.
In 1855, Whitman published the first edition of his life's work, Leaves of Grass. It was considered a shocking book at that time, mostly because of the open way in which Whitman wrote about sexuality, but also because it was written in free verse, which was then rather unpopular.
