Life and Works
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was born into a Scottish family devoted to
the austerities and rigors of Calvinism. He was educated at the University
of Edinburgh in preparation for the church. The great emotional and
intellectual crises of Carlyle's life came when he lost his faith in
Christianity. The result was that he left the ministry, but he never abandoned
the moral and religious values he had inherited. Moreover, his life was
