Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh on Nov.13, 1850 to Thomas Stevenson and Margaret Isabel Belfour. Father Thomas wanted Louis to pursue a lighthouse engineer's career in the spirit of family tradition. However, his poor health and his greater love for writing would not warrant such a career. Stevenson excelled as an essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, travel writer and as an author of short stories.
