The Swiss author Johanna Spyri wrote the delightful story Heidi. Johanna was born in Hirzel, a small town in Switzerland, near the city of Zurich. Her father Johann Jacob Heusser was a doctor. Johanna grew up on the slopes of the Alps. She married Bernhard Spyri, a lawyer. They had only one child, a son who died. Johanna Spyri wrote several books for children. She wrote of her own childhood memories--the murmur of wind in fir trees, the sound of cowbells merrily ringing, and the warmth of the sun shining on mountain meadows covered with flowers.
