Interpretations of the 'Dictionary' by Samuel Johnson dwell on the the extent to which it describes language and its tendency towards cultural encyclopedism. Descriptions of Johnson's lexicographic evolution also neglect his references to gender. It is shown that stereotypical perceptions about gender during the 18th century allowed Johnson to present ideas relating to his personal beliefs on language.
