Summary.
During the following summer, intense literary efforts made Augustine ill.
He complained of chest pains and difficulty in drawing his breath. This
compelled him to stop all of his teaching. Augustine was pleased with this
convenient excuse to withdraw from his professorship of rhetoric. Accordingly
he waited the twenty days until the vacation period began before submitting
