Introduction.

The best known of the many writings of Augustine is the Confessions. When
it was first published about the year 400, Augustine had been the Bishop of
Hippo, North Africa, for nearly five years. Rarely has any religious leader
spoken so candidly and honestly of his personal life. He is not proud of his
youthful immorality. He does not boast of his early indiscretions but
describes his life humbly in order to demonstrate his profound indebtedness to
