Sons a worthy choice for first Lardner award

The people who know Ray Sons--and that would include just about anybody who played or followed sports in Chicago from the 1960s into the '90s--will not be a bit surprised to learn that when he was told he was receiving a sportswriting award named after Ring Lardner, he pronounced himself stunned and flattered.

I guess they were looking for a geezer who is still standing," said Sons, who will join Greg Gumbel and the late Tim Weigel as recipients of the Chi-cago Athletic Association's first Ring Lardner awards Nov. 21.
