Machiavelli has been one of the most controversial figures in the history
of political thought, and The Prince one of its most discussed works. The
debate began during the author's life and continues to this day.

One of Machiavelli's closest friends, and the contemporary whose mind was
perhaps most similar to his in operation, was Francesco Guicciardini, the
author of a history of Florence that preceded and in some ways anticipated
