Although Machiavelli is best known for The Prince, and to a lesser extent
The Discourses, these are by no means his only important literary works. Many
of his letters survive. Some tell of his plans, others are requests for
positions or advice to rulers, and several tell of his boredom in exile. The
latter, while they tell little of Machiavelli the political philosopher,
demonstrate another side of Machiavelli the man, who was a sensualist in an
