Versatility:
It is difficult indeed to assess the scope of a man as versatile as
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He was an enormously prolific writer, and he
worked steadily from his teen-age years until just a few days before his death
at the age of eighty-two. He excelled in many different types of literature,
notably the drama, the epic, the novel, and the lyric poem; his autobiography
is noteworthy; his literary criticism, if controversial, is nevertheless well
