An examination of Nancy Lord, the central female character in George Gissing's 'In the Year of Jubilee,' shows the writer's ability to counter his personal opinions through a powerful character. Gissing, who has been dismissed by critics because of his inability to transcend his personal beliefs, has produced a character and a text that are ideal examples in a discussion on unified artistry. Although the novel ends with an affirmation of the patriarchal order, Nancy is the thematic and epistemological center of the novel. Gissing subverts his ideology through his character.
