Impressionism And "Germinal."

Among the causes which Emile Zola courageously championed, under the risk
of his own reputation and success, was that of the Impressionists. To the
consternation of many well established art critics and journal publishers,
Emile Zola defended the subject matter, color technique, and artistic
conception of Edouard Manet's controversial Impressionistic art. Even the
term "Impressionism" was originally one of critical ridicule and disdain.
