Critical Review

Considered A Classic:

Edward Everett Hale's patriotic short story is considered to be an
American classic. It has faults in structure and its basic situation is almost
unbelievable. Nevertheless, Hale has Ingham relate the tale in such a
realistic fashion that it appears to be simple historical truth.

Patriotism:

Hale wrote his story in the first place out of love of country. In 1863,
Clement L. Vallandigham of Ohio said that he would rather not live in a
