It is apparent that James Fenimore Cooper uses a variety of symbolic names in his novel The Prairie. Most readers will recognize that Ishmael Bush, like his biblical namesake, is a man whose hand is against every other man's hand. Ishmael's brother-in-law Abiram White, likewise, has a symbolic name that fits his character.
