Brief Account Of Cooper's Life And Works
Early Years, Naval Experience, And Marriage:
James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New
Jersey. When he was only a bit over one year old, his family moved to
Cooperstown, a frontier settlement in central New York State, established by
his Federalist father, Judge Cooper. There, on the banks of Otsego Lake, he
grew up, watching the frontier continually being pushed back, and always
finding a fascination in the strange darkness of the neighboring wilderness
