The character of Alton Locke in Charles Kingsley's novel entitled 'Allan Locke: Tailor and Poet' is analyzed in terms of his concept of democracy and democrats. Alton Locke early in the novel espouses Jeffersonian democracy which vests full reliance on the common man in the pursuit of the ideal political setup. However, Locke shifts from such a populist attitude into a Carlylean view of democracy as he espouses the election of leaders who are made of greater stuff than the electorate.
